The ice had come and gone, leaving behind a floating city, stricken in the night, the pride of the sky's glory. Now she stood death-still. Her mighty screws had turned their last, her tall stacks ceased to breathe. A man in black took my small hand. My father reached to me, but white gloves pushed him back. No men allowed to live, to seek their lives aboard the boats. He said no word, but gave me one last look; he said more then than volumes could have done. I think I slept. Carpathia was there when I awoke, her taut lines drenched in blood, red-painted by the dawn. We rose and swayed up to the deck, sodden and shivering. There was enough salt water all around, so no-one wept. The sea needs not man's tears.
