I used this poem for a final exam for English. Dad (Gryphonpoet) told me it was very good, so I figured I'd post it up.
------------------------
As I watch from a high place I see someone emerge Someone who’s a little different Someone who’s likes what I like The only difference is he’s “black”
I feel as helpless as a baby bird as his “peers” read the words “We find the defendant guilty.” As these words are read I weep
I know he was as innocent as I But many just can’t see the clear sky All they see is the color of skin All they see is the person’s kin
Oh how I wish, they could see These people are people like them and me Oh how I wish they could know Just what they were doing to this poor fellow
Sending him to forever be Disgraced by society To be shunned but nature it seems
Oh why, oh why, why can’t they see? We all live together, breathe together Oh why, oh why can’t they see? We are all one people One people divided by something as simple As the color of our skin
Oh why does this have to be? Why can’t they just see? Why can’t they just play? Why can’t they just say “hey?” Why can’t they just accept and move on? What do they have to loose?
Nothing but pride
