Ok guys, I dunno where to put this thread so I'll just stick it here since it is a 'discussion' type question. It's more like a need for input or help. I'd like to point out that I am not very knowledgeable of the D&D paper based version, my only experience with D&D has been on the PC (e.g. NeverWinter Nights). So I'm not quite sure of the exact procedures and stuff when playing D&D (this is not the question!) I am just relaying this question/story from my sister who is involved in a game currently (to resume next week) Her and her party have just encountered a White dragon at the top of a mountain (I think). They were meant to be level 15 when meeting it but I think they are a bit inexperienced. Needless to say the white dragon doesn't attack them outright, it just keeps repeating one question Why are you here?Whatever they reply, the dragon keeps saying they are lying (i.e. it says Lies!. When they answer something stupid, like 'We are dumb@sses' it knocks one of them out. Currently all party members have been knocked out (except for the DM's girlfriend, who he favours ) Any ideas what the answer to the question is or what they should do? Let me know if you need any other details.

Is DM trying to get the party to back down the mountain and get some more experience, perhaps? If the party were at full strength, they could respond, "We're here to kill you." But then a fight would ensue that the PCs may not be ready for.
The implication seems that the group is outmatched by the dragon. My first response might be to back down the mountain and come back when we're a 15th level party.

While odd behavior for a white dragon (I think...), it DOES sound like the GM is trying to prevent the PC's from continuing. Perhaps they have missed a vital clue to the question by skipping a previous quest or something of that nature.
If the GM is simply trying to prevent them from entering into a higher level dungeon inside/on the mountain, they may simply be too low a level. This can also be handled by going back and hitting up the areas that they missed the first time around.

Thanks for the help guys. The GM felt 'Sorry' for them and spawned a temporary NPC, that explained to the dragon that they were in the wrong and it wouldn't happne again etc. Then the dragon released them. Stupidly, my sister went on to set off a trap slightly later in the session, killing her She says she'll rise as a zombie! Of course, as wonderful as her friends in the game are, they said they were "Further back" than she claims they were so they "weren't hurt" - the bastards!

That'll learn her... There is never a backup when someone sets off a trap. If the DM goes "BOOM" first, then everyone else is naturally over 30 feet back. I'm not sure that I'd like my character to rise as a zombie. That sounds rather... well, bad. More like what happens when I piss off a 20th level evil cleric or something.
