Great Journey

Here is the beginning of a children's story I am currently scribing. Please give me advise on stuff to strengthen it and other things you see that need changing.

In any forest you can find many different types of life. This is a story about one of those life forms. She’s a dryad and her home was a magnificent sycamore. She lived a happy life until one fateful day.
This day started off like any other. She awoke to the sunlight starting to fade in through the canopy and the birds letting out their first coos of the day. She pulled herself from the white bark and stretched. She sniffed the air and looked around.
“Come out Tiberus, I know you’re near.”
A small wood elf stepped around an old oak tree that stood next to her home and replied, “I can never sneak up on you, Aeris. I bring news from your grandmother.”
“What might this news be?”
“I don’t know exactly but she told me to bring you to her, she said something about it dealing with your destiny.”
“Where is she, down by her willow tree?”
“Yes, she also said that my path flows along with your’s so I am needed as well.”
So they set off on a journey to see Grandmother Nadia. It wasn’t that far to the great willow tree by the pond in the middle of the woods in which the lived, even though Aeris lived near the entrance. The path was easy to follow since she traveled almost everyday. It took them about half an hour to reach their destination.
Grandmother Nadia was sitting in the middle of the pond meditating on a large rock. When she could sense her granddaughter and Tiberus she rose off of the rock and floated over to the bank. As she settled into the area near them she opened her eyes and nodded at them.
“Aeris there is a dark fate looming over this forest and you are the only one who can stop it from happing. There is a logging company moving in to replace this entire area with a human society. But for this to happen our society will be completely destroyed. Your destiny is to stop these monsters by any means necessary.”
“Where are they going to start their operation?”
“In the southern most part of this forest, so you have to start your journey now. Follow the river that is just over that pass and you should find the encampment. If you come across any other creature that will help you on this you must get them to follow your cause. Now go and stop this terrible fate from happening.”
Aeris and Tiberus bade farewell to Grandmother Nadia and followed her directions to get to the river. The way was not that far but it held its own difficulties. The trail was traveled by most of the creatures that they knew, Grandmother told them to try and get help but they were having hesitations about signing up one of their friends

Huh, shaggy you mis-spelled "happening" and put it as "happing"
alright and it's when they get to Grandma Nadia and she's telling of their destiny, but it's good so far by my opinion.
