The tulips sit in my box on the ledge, watching
the clear-air turbulence in this city. People,
with little time and less patience for each other,
slip into the footnotes of history
with the style of garbage and the grace of a feather.
Let them pass with their obscure wisdom,
their insignificance and their dull wit.
Despite my best effort, I will join them by and by
except inside the hearts who cup their own
pistils and stamen with leaves of memories,
drawn and scribed from who I am,
with the stylus of my actions and words.
