This thread here is the Battle and Rolls Thread, whose purpose is to make combat over this message board based medium as easy and dramatic as possible. The way this is done is by giving you the PCs all the information you might need while writing your posts in the main thread. You will have to alternate between this thread and the main game thread, but that shouldn’t be difficult at all, so hopefully this all works.
Here’s how to use this thread.
When a battle starts in the main game thread, BB will describe the situation, giving any witty remarks or cutting words to your characters. NPCs may also do things here.
Then you will follow the link provided to hop to this thread, where it will detail just what each enemy character is doing during that round of combat. This will include who they hit, how much damage is done, and if they are taking cover. Actions by NPCs will also be listed here.
Third, you post what your character is doing, including rolls for damage. Note that most actions in one round of combat will happen at roughly the same time, no matter whose side it is on. If you would like to do something in particular to an enemy or NPC, ask about it here before you do the next step. BB will try to stay current during battles, so it shouldn’t be long before one of us gets back to you on the matter. You don’t have to worry about describing the enemies getting hit; BB has to have SOME fun, here! *laugh*
Last, you hop back over to the main game thread, and make a second post describing everything that is happening with/around your character. You should also include a link to your post to your post in the Battle Thread, just so everything stays lined up. Note, that you WILL have to describe your character getting hit and stuff.
Actually attacking is a relatively simple matter. You say what you wish to do and then roll 1d20+ (Firearms) or (Hand to Hand). This gives you a Difficulty Target (DT), which the other person must meet or beat to dodge. This is done with the same equation. After that, roll up the damage of the attack and include that in your post. Also, for the purposes of Hand to Hand damage, you add an additional bonus equal to your Strength divided by four, rounded down.
Equations: Attack (melee): 1d20+ Hand to Hand. Damage: Weapon damage + (Str ÷ 4). Dodge (melee): 1d20+ Hand to Hand. Must meet or beat attack DT. Attack (range and explosives): 1d20+ Firearms. Damage: Weapon Damage. Dodge (range and explosives): 1d20+ Firearms. Must meet or beat attack DT.
The next post will be an example, and can be reached here. If you do not know how to link to posts, that can be found here.
All sound simple enough? Any questions you have should be posted in here. I’ll try to answer them as quickly as possible.
Example #3: Using the Battle Thread. I’ll try to walk you through the proper use of the thread here, step by step. Anything in a Quote is simulating the main game thread. Anything outside of a quote will be simulating this Battle Thread.
Cania and Yorrick are out on a date, when suddenly they are attacked by Cania’s arch-nemesis; a toaster! Stopping in surprise at seeing such a dogged enemy in a city park, she is happy that Yorrick is there when she sees another toaster come out from behind a tree…
Big Brother Post
Combat Start: PCs 2. Enemies 2. Npcs 0. Cania: 33 Hp, armed with a SS-7 Pistol: Ranged, 1d6+1 Dmg, Impact, [Dual]. Yorrick: 36 Hp, armed with a "Zorbidov": Melee, 2d6 Dmg, Energy, [Stun], [Dual]. Toaster A: 10 Hp, armed with toast: Ranged, 1d6, Syrup, [Stun] Toaster B: 30 Hp, armed with toast: Ranged, 1d6, Syrup, [Stun]
Toaster A attacks Cania. Rolls a 4, for a Ranged DT:8. 4 syrup damage. Toaster B attacks Cania. Rolls a 20, for a Ranged DT:24. 3 syrup damage.
PC Post
Cania is going to roll behind a tree, and take cover. She rolls an 8 vs. the first attack, DT: 8, for a total defense of 12. The attack misses. She rolls a 12 vs. Toaster B’s attack, DT: 24, and gets hit for 3 damage. She then fires a shot at Toaster A. She rolls a 18 for a Ranged DT:26. If she hits, she does 5 damage. Yorrick jumps up and attacks Toaster A. He rolls 12, for a Melee DT:20, and does 8 points of damage.
PC Post
Cania pulls out her pistol, glad that she remembered to bring it. You can never be too careful, especially for the two of them. She spun and fired off a shot, yelling for Yorrick to cover her. Yorrick rushed up and followed right behind her shot, attempting to knock the offending appliance into the air with a swift uppercut.
Diving behind a tree, Cania pulled out her radio as she ran. She yelped in surprise as a piece of dry toast slammed into the ground in front of her. Diving behind a different tree, she was surprised to find the other toaster there, waiting for her. She gasped as a second piece of dry bread bounced off her shoulder. --- My Battle Post can be found HERE (if this wasn’t a made up post).
Again, any questions? This SOUNDS a little odd, but it isn’t all that complicated once you get it figured out.
Ted: HP:??, armed with Vanguard Rifle: Ranged, 2d6+1, Impact [ROF2] Regis: HP:?? armed with Vanguard Pistol: Ranged, 1d6, Energy, [Dual]
Ted strikes Xi'ku for 10 and 9 damage due to surprise round. (no defense) Regis strikes Georgiana for 6 (ouch!) due to surprise round. (no defense)
The battle is taking palce in a T-intersection hallway, with the turnoff running into Vanguard troopers. At the far end of the hallway, there is a closed bulkhead door. Beyond the Vanguard blockade is a turnoff to the comms room. The hallway containing the blockade extends off into an unknown location. The baricade is constructed of everyday items including but not limited to desks, chairs and even one potted plant.
Rudimentary chart: ___ | a| | -| | b|___| g |___ | f________h___ | c | | d | | - | | e |
-----
a: A currently sealed bulkhead. b: Xi'ku and George are here. c: Brian, Summer and Za'che are here. d: Hannalore is here e: This is back down the spine of the ship. The way you came. f: Vanguard blockade. Ted and Regis are here behind light fortifications. g: Comms room. h: Exit route. Unknown destination.
Tip: The only way to be unaffected by combat is to actively withdraw from combat.

Hannalore creeps forward roughly to point C and fires a shot around the corner with her Hayes pistol. She arms at the nearest, which I am intrepreting as Ted as he is first on the name list.
Ted's To Dodge DT: 1d20 (7) + Firearms (0)= 7 Damage (It could happen!) is 1d6 (3) +1= 4

"You think that you can tell us apart? Many have tried, but then again, many have failed. What do you think the price for that is?" The Three Sisters Lylie-governess to a child of the first plain "You grew up. Thats a shame. The carousel never stops turning. You cant get off either. Its a shame."
Ok, the stat/skill that you roll for all Melee based attacks is Hand to Hand. If and when you hit, damage is determined by the weapon. The stat block for unarmed attacks is such:
Unarmed Attack: 1d6+ [Bod÷ 4], Impact, [Dual]. CL: 0. Unarmed [Dual] may only be used if you are attacking with only Unarmed Attacks. Keshian Claws add +3 to Unarmed Attack damage.
Also, combat here is really simple. There are no ‘attack’ or ‘move’ actions. You simply move how you want, and attack. If you have a weapon with a viable tag like [Dual] or [RoF], you can attack more then once, but if not, you only get one attack.
Any other questions? I’m gonna get Hannalore’s post up, and then start the next round of combat here soon.
Hannalore is checking on Xi'ku, checking vital signs and if she needs to operate or anything on him. She got a 16 on her roll if she needs to do any sort of medical check. The gives her a total of 26 on her First Aid check.
People, since you didn’t bother to update your numbers, I’m going to just go with what you gave me. Please do them correctly this next round of combat.
Karl dodges twice. He attacks Summer twice in unarmed combat. Give me two Melee dodges, DC: 16 and DC: 14. Each attack does 5 Impact damage.
Thomas successfully dodges, barely. Aoi gets kicked for 2 Impact damage.
Lylie, you are getting attacked by both Aoi with her rifle and Thomas with the area of effect from his grenade. Aoi’s attack is Ranged DC: 24, at 15 Energy damage. Thomas’ grenade is a Ranged DC: 9, at 11 Explosive damage.
Summer reacts a bit slow taking the first blow pretty square in the shoulder. She manages to dodge the second blow. As soon as he turns his head, she takes the opportunity to swing at him two more times.
If you were to come up with 8.99 points worth of damage, it would be rounded to 8.

Georgiana Ureon fires at Thomas with her Jackhammer.
I rolled under the supervising gaze of Tem. It was an 11. Can I get a ruling as to whether this counts as an 11 or if it counts as 1 twice?
Anyways, enough smart-assery.
Attack: 1d20=11+8=19 Damage: 2d6=10+2=12
DT 18 or 12 damage
(OOC: Sorry about the frustration. I realized after seeing Tem's post that I forgot my damage. Also, I reverted to the previous format I used, seeing as it looked streamlined)
