Well I would right off the bat recommend some the the "essentials". Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira (or anything by Katsuheiro Otomo), La Puta "Castle in the Sky" (or anything by Miyazaki), Blue Seed, Any of the Gundam series, Scrapped Princess, Full Metal Panic, FLCL, Hellsing, Robotech, Tenchi Muyo (or any of the subsequent spin offs such as Tenchi in Tokyo and Pretty Sammy), Inuyasha (or other things by Rumiko Takahashi), Vampire Hunter D, Blood: The Last Vampire....the list goes on and on.

If you are looking for a certain type of anime just let me know I have hundreds that I've either seen or know of that you might enjoy ^_^.

Favorite anime:

1. Juuni Kokuki (Twelve Kingdoms). Political drama, medieval China, fantastic characterization, beautiful art, flying cavalry, and Nakajima Youko.
2. Full Metal Alchemist. If, for some reason, you want to understand me, watch Ed during the last ten episodes.
3. Irresponsible Captain Tylor. The most genuinely uplifting thing I've ever seen. Episode 23 is a work of genius and is by itself enough reason to watch the whole series.
4. Saiunkoku Monogatari (Tale of Saiun). I honestly don't know why I like this so much.
5. Revolutionary Girl Utena. Full of more symbolism than Lord of the Flies, but oh so good.

Runners-up: Death Note, Berserk, Trigun, Bleach, Tenshi ni Narumon.

Favorite female characters, in no particular order: Nakajima Youko, the Royal Kei (Juuni Kokuki), Kou Shuurei (Saiunkoku Monogatari), Kuchiki Rukia (Bleach), Hino Emu (Crying Freeman), Tenjou Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena).

Favorite male characters, likewise: Shoryu, the Royal En (Juuni Kokuki), Rakushun (Juuni Kokuki), Yagami Light (Death Note), Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist), Griffith/Femto (Berserk). Runners-up include L, Millions Knives, Tylor, Shindou Hikaru, and Kiryuu Touga.
