 Learn to take a Joke!
« Thread Started on May 13, 2007, 12:46pm »

I'm going to state this one time. If people want equal treatment, I'll give it to them, if they don't I'll give them that too.

Something happened to me today a work that I thought I should tell you about, and gauge peoples reaction, and get their opinions on it.

I was standing around at work with some of the guys that I work with on our lunch break. We stood outside, smoked and joked around before we had to go back in. Durring this time, my friend Sean told a joke, that by nature was abit controversial because it's punch-line was jokingly dregrading the female gender. This must be keenly understood. Sean is not a mosogynist. He has a wife, and a new son and loves his wife very much, and respects what women put up with on a daily basis. But like all men, despite sexual prefference, there are times when you just get fed up with the female gender for a period of time and feel the need to poke fun at them.

Now before any girls get up in a tizzy, I hang around with you all alot too, and you do the same thing, if not moreso than most of the guys I hang around with.

Moving on. After the joke was over, all the guys, myself included got a chuckle from the joke. Well a woman came up to the door from her car and asked what we where laughing about. We all fell silent at this question untill I spoke up and said, "We where laughing at a joke" to which she said "Oh really? Can I hear it." I warned her that the punchline was alittle degrading to her sex, she said she didn't mind and so I told it this time instead of Sean. She looked at me like I had just poo-ed all over the carpet. She said that the joke wasn't funny and I should be ashamed of myself for finding it thus.

This pissed me off for one reason or another, and at the time I couldn't figure out why. I stood there in mute anger for a moment before looking at her and teller her this, "You asked, I told you that you might not have wanted to hear it, and you insisted so I told you. You have no right to be pissed at me. Females want equal treatment, right? Well if I told you it was a guy joke, you would have thought that I didn't want to tell you because you where a woman and wouldn't get, thus calling you stupid, and you would have been offended then too. So either way I walked away the bad guy. If I have a black joke, and I couldn't tell it in Dayton, then I don't need to tell it. If I have a cripple joke and I can't tell it to a guy in a wheel chair, I have no right telling that joke to anyone. Same thing applies here. Whether or not you got offended is your own problem. If you want me to "Clean up my jokes around ladies" then you are telling me that you want SPECIAL treament, and not equal. So therefore, telling me that, you are telling me "Aj, you need to do this because I can't handle this, and so you should aquiest to my request as a lesser being because I don't have the mental capacity to deal with it on a personal level." That's what your telling me?" To which she replied No. Then by all accounts she can't be pissed at me anymore, because she wants equal treatment so I'm not going to appologize.

I'm sick of everyone getting this backwards. I have the right of free speach weather or not people like what I'm saying or not, I'm not going to make applogies to people if I offended them and I give them due warning, or didn't know the cirumstances at the time. If you tell me, your brother was beaten to death because he was gay, I won't make gay jokes around you, because now I know the cirumstances, and the joke is innapropriate for the situation at hand (Yes I still make gay jokes despite my sexual preffernce.), however I will not have a problem making a joke once your gone, because then your not there to hear me say it, and thus the conversation had nothing to do with you directly despite being tied to you though the subject of homosexuality. This goes for anything else as well.

People don't know how to take a joke anymore. I make racial jokes from time to time, why.....because their funny. I make black jokes, I have alot of black friends, I make Latino jokes, my boyfriends family is from South America...etc. People need to lighten up...

A+ for the rant there man. When I want to tell a Racial joke, I just call the guys from R.A.C.E. to do it for me XD

Hey, you want to know how we know adam and eve aren't black? ever tried to take a rib from a brother?

Ok so I watch Carlos Mencia a lot >.> Sue me.

Anyways, what can you do. If people want to bitch and moan about your jokes then let them. They have that right under the 1st amendment. You also have the right under the 1st amendment to make sure you retell that joke in a loud annoying voice everytime said person comes around. Or you could just ignore said person and continue telling the best damn sexual/racial/whatever jokes you can.

oh, and yes, I actually did post. This isn't a figment of imagination, I actually did post something on the forum. Go me!

Perhaps it was not so much the joke, but the fact that it was yet another sexist joke... but since she did ask for it, she should not really get so annoyed.

I post on a gaming forum and I am not joking when I say that there are 4 females (including me) and about 50-100 males, so we are drastically out numbered. And I get sick of the stupid jokes they tell, and even more irate when they laugh and say its just a joke (then sober up when my female collegue retorts very aptly)

So it is dependant on what has happened before the event truly... and don't you DARE use that 'must be that time of the month' crap ;D

Humor. It is a difficult concept. It is not logical.

No worries, Hatter. I still love you and you can tell me any joke you want. I'll probably pass them on to my sister, too. ;)

If it was at work, on break or not, maybe it wasn't appropriate. Just a thought... most places (people abiding by Ohio state law) call for harassment for things like that.

WARNING STRONG LANGUAGE
If that where the case all the time, everyone could be calling harassment for every other word said. Someone could call harassment for me saying black instead of saying "african american"... Which is also a little ridiculous in my book. Many can run around "dropping the N bomb" but so help you God if you say it you racist. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the word nigger in and of itself, it's the context, it's the meaning behind the word that makes it good or bad. We don't mind when 50 cent or the guys on Russel Simmons Def Poetry Jam say it, because we know they're black. Just like I know I'm whitey the blue-eyed devil, patio fade grey honkey cracker mother-fucker myself....doesn't bother me any. What if it was just one white guy saying it? What if said white guy was dating or married to a black person? Is it all right then? ...we don't need two standards one is enough. All too often people take things out of context. If I said nigger in a conversation alot of people would stop me right as I said it and ask me what I had against blacks...nothing at all. I just think that this P.c. plague thats hit this country needs a vacation.

Hmmm I think that sums you up pretty good. :-/

But anyways, everyone is guilty for saying some that is not P.C.

Something else you might want to think about before you say something you take every connotation that comes with it. Whether it be positive or negative. If you say the 'N' word you take all the negative comes out of your mouth also.

You can't display a rebel flag and not expect people to think your racist. The person could be celebrating their family history and be proud of their ancestors who fought for what they believed in and not be racist at all. Doesn't mean everyone else will associate them with slavery and white supremacy.

If someone was wearing the upside down cross they would be taking all the good and bad things associated with it and put it on themselves. The upside down cross is associated with satanism but adversely was a native American symbol of some kind. Someone could be wearing it for their heritage but will unfortunately have people automatically think they are satanic.

This is the same for speech. Lesson is: think before you open your mouth. You may not like it but it is the way it is.

I know this thread has been dead for awhile, but seeing as though I left the board some time ago and didn't come back until recently, I feel the need to have the last word in this.

Dyne....what exactly do you mean by "Hmmm I think that sums you up pretty good."? Enlighten me oh sage, keeper of endless knowledge. Now people who know me, which you obviously don't, know that I have no problem lambasting someone. So if you ever do get around to reading this, after your hard day trolling the parking lot of the Jr. High School, know this.

The beauty of freedom of expression is that I could walk into NOW HQ or MISS magazine and ask "which one of you cute little cup-cakes what to come home and fix me a nice meal and have sex with me at which point I'll roll over and fall asleep?" Wouldn't make it a good idea, in fact I'd probably be dragged out into the parking lot and castrated with a broken coke bottle. But because of the freedoms in this country there is nothing written that says I can't do just that.

Do you think that I support these fascist neo-Nazi, white supremacist nut jobs? If I did, why am I going to be getting married to a Spaniard? It's just like with anything else Dyne, it's called Context.

The Context matters, weather you think it does or not. The Native American wearing the upside down cross, shouldn't care what the closed minded asshole thinks when he says "your a satanist", because it doesn't have anything to do with him.

We've come to a place in this country where words hurt, and I think it's ludicrous. Words don't hurt, their only words, it's the context that makes them what they are. So far as your statement, it doesn't matter it comes out anyway, alright then. From now on, no one is allowed to speak or write for fear of offending someone, if that's your case, what about all the illiterate people out there, who can't read or write? What about the deaf, mute and blind people out there? They can't understand what we mean when we explain to them what something looks like, or what something sounds like, so because they don't understand the context, and since the negative comes out weather we want it to or not, we aren't allowed to experience anything? This makes sense, a lot in fact, why don't you start us off Dyne, put yourself into a coma as an example to show us how we should be acting. Who knows you might start a trend, where all you liberal left wing, P.C. nut jobs will do exactly what I've been wanting you to do for quite some time, which is shut up and deal with the fact that people like me might not be the majority, but there's just enough of us out there to piss off uptight people like you.

This personal attack has been brought to you by Hatter, serving community needs since 1987. Hatter; Redefining what it means to be a complete asshole.
